In this talk, Michael Burton, Director of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, examines the historical and scientific importance of Ireland’s renowned astronomical observatories at Armagh, Birr and Dunsink.
As President of the International Astronomical Union’s Commission for World Heritage and Astronomy, he is leading efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for these sites. Earlier this year, Birr and Dunsink were placed on Ireland’s UNESCO Tentative List — a significant first step towards full inscription.
The talk traces the remarkable astronomical achievements of these observatories across the long nineteenth century and highlights their pioneering contributions to the development of the modern astronomical observatory.
